Preface

welcome to my blog ..
On this blog I took the theme of the Internet, because I think the Internet is very important for humans, in addition to obtaining information and seeking information, the Internet also plays an important role for life for example in terms of employment.

Defining the internet

What is a Personal Computer (PC)?
We all know what a Personal Computer (PC) is, and what it is made up of. It consists of a Central Processing Unit (CPU), some input devices like keyboard or mouse, some output devices like monitor or printer and finally some storage devices like hard disk or floppy disk.

A Computer cannot do anything on this own. It requires an operating system like Microsoft Windows 95/98/2000/xp,some application software like Microsoft Office, and utilities like Notepad, Paint, Scandisk, etc.

What is a Standalone PC?
when a computer is not connected to any other computer then it is said to be a Standalone computer. In literal sense a computer that stands alone is not connected to any other computer and hence its name.

What is a computer network?
This is a fundamental concept of the internet. To understand it, read the following example.
The Post and Telegraph Service is a network we use in our daily life. It has been in-service years before the discovery of  PCs and functions without them even today. Every local post office behaves like a node and is connected to the head office of the city or  town or village. The head office behaves like a server and is linked to the other city offices. These city offices are connected to the offices of other cities in the world, thus forming a complete network.

When a PC is connected to one or more PCs with the helps of cables such that it can share data with the others, then it is said to be on a network. Each PC connected on a network is called a node or a terminal. All data is served from one PC to another with the help of a server that controls this process and keeps a check on the data transmitted. Computer networks can be classified into two types - LAN andWAN.

LAN (Local Area Network)
A group of computers connected to each other in close range such as a bulding, office, or even a single room like a schools computer laboratory is a called a Local Area Network. Due to the small size of the network, data is usually transferred rapidly.

WAN (Wide Area Network)
A computer network that covers a larger geographical area and made of at least two LANs is called a wide Area Network. This network may be connected by telephone wire, cable or even satellite. All networks besides a LAN  are usually WANs. The Internet or the World Wide Web is an example of the largest WANs ever known.

 What is a Protocol?
This is one of the most important concepts related to the internet. To understand this concept, consider the following example. I know how to read, write and speak only Hindi. You know how to read, write and speak only English. I ask you for your name in Hindi but you are unable to reply. As you are not able to understand the language in which I asked you the question, you are not able to respond although you know the answer.

Similarly, PCs on a network need to talk to each other. To do this, they follow a fixed set of rules known as protocol. Protocols for the internet are such that PCs not only talk to each other but also send and receive information. Some of the widely used protocols and their uses are listed below:
  • TCP/IP = Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol - used for transferring data over the internet
  • HTTP = Hypertext Transfer Protocol - used for sending information to the browser from the server
  • SMTP = Simple Mail Transfer Protocol -  used for sending e-mail over the internet
  •  POP = Post Office Protocol - used for receiving e-mail over the internet
